Crafting Productivity Hack: Listening to Audiobooks While You Create
For over ten years now, Audible has been one of my constant companions at the craft table. Ornament making takes time and focus, but it also offers plenty of quiet moments where my hands are busy while my mind is free to wander. That’s where audiobooks come in—they keep me entertained, inspired, and sometimes even learning something new, all while I get my ornaments finished.
I recommend this habit to every fellow maker: let your craft time double as your story time. It’s a way to get lost in a good book while your hands are in motion.
When I’m in the mood to be extra productive, I’ll listen to a business or self-improvement book. Recently, Atomic Habits by James Clear (a must-read for building better routines) has been on my list. Also, Hidden Potential by Adam Grant, which gave me fresh ways to think about growth and creativity. On the other hand, when I want my craft time to feel more like a retreat, I turn to novels. I recently finished Diana Gabaldon’s Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. I especially love her books in audio format because Davina Porter’s narration is phenomenal—she brings the characters to life in a way that makes me forget I’m working at all. Next, I’m diving back into Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series (often called ACOTAR). The immersive world-building and dramatic storytelling make it perfect for long ornament-making sessions.
If you’re curious to give audiobooks a try, I can’t recommend Audible enough. They have thousands of titles to choose from, and you can listen while you make, drive, walk, or just relax. You can check it out here: Try Audible.
Whether it’s learning, relaxing, or escaping into another world, Audible has become an essential part of my creative process. It turns long hours of work into something I look forward to even more.
Do you listen to something while you make? Music, podcasts, or maybe audiobooks like me? I’d love to hear what keeps you company at the craft table.
