DIY Christmas Ornament Challenge | Step-by-Step Tutorial for Beginners
Hi friends! 🌟
I tried something completely new this week; my very first Mystery Ornament Challenge! The idea is simple: let chance decide the design, the number of colors, and the color palette. No planning, no overthinking — just pure fun, creative chaos.
How the Challenge Works
I wanted to shake up my usual crafting routine, so I filled a few jars with random options:
Design choices: 17 total, split between freebie designs and premium ones.
Color count: Anywhere from one to six colors.
Colors: Every shade of the rainbow, plus black, white, silver, gold, pink, and gray.
To make things even more interesting, I decided to use only materials I already had; no shopping for new supplies allowed.
The Results Are In!
After a few dramatic shakes of the jar, fate decided my crafting destiny:
Design: Four Division Reflection Ornament (a freebie design)
Colors: Gold, Black, and Purple
I was thrilled! These colors felt bold and elegant.
Step-by-Step Highlights
1. Marking and Dividing the Ball
After marking the poles, I divided the foam ball into four equal sections using my trusty measuring chart. Two perpendicular lines created the perfect symmetry for my Four Division Reflection design.
2. Cutting and Preparing the Grooves
I made clean 1 cm cuts along the lines, and used my tucking tool(an upholstery needle)to widen the grooves — a crucial step for smooth fabric tucking.
3. Choosing and Tucking Fabrics
I used soft and stretchy purple satin and stiff but gorgeously reflective, super-wide black glitter ribbon. The satin behaved beautifully, but the glitter ribbon definitely tested my patience and my hand strength!
💡 Tip: If you have arthritis or limited grip strength, stick to quilting cotton or satin. The glitter ribbon looks amazing, but it’s tough to work with.
4. Covering Seams with Gold Ribbon
Wide gold ribbon hid every imperfection at the seams.
5. Adding Finishing Touches
Each purple section got a gold-framed button centerpiece. Then came the sequins, metallic beads, and finally a multicolored purple, black, and gold bow on top.
The Final Ornament
When I stepped back to admire the finished piece, I couldn’t stop smiling. The final look is regal, sparkly, and totally giving Evil Queen energy. 👑 It’s a reminder that creativity can flourish when you let go of control. Sometimes the best designs come from pure chance.
